In the spring of 1979, my boyfriend, Robert, made a robot in my image.
Consisting of plywood and electronics, Flossie 2, was more rudimentary than
some of our later models would end up being. Still, she was enough to suit our
needs, back then. She provided a robot essence that emanated from her very
being. Flossie 2 turned out to be very useful for such things as providing proof of
concept, marketing attraction, and a unique piece of artwork. She also proved
to be a wonderful guard, when standing sentient over our brick and mortar shops.
Flash forward to the end of August, 1980. Robert and I had moved to Riviera
Beach, FL. where we were running a thrift shop, "Interplanetary Trading Company".
The summer heat, which always tended to show up in a heavy handed manner,
in Florida, seemed to have bested itself, this year, for this year's
version of summer was nothing if not oppressively intense. I was almost 8 months
pregnant, and was starting to look more and more like the traditional beached whale.
